Rechargeable Digital Hearing Aids

Modern rechargeable hearing aids have proven really popular with hearing aid users. In fact, talking to other professionals it appears that most consumers want rechargeable devices. We have been using rechargeable hearing aids from all of the big hearing device brands in Worcester for several years now and we have had some amazing success. This article is dedicated to the rechargeable hearing aids we provide in Worcester and will be updated as more new innovations come along.

Phonak was the first hearing aid brand to introduce lithium-ion rechargeable hearing aids. Since then every hearing aid manufacturer with the exception of Widex has introduced lithium-ion rechargeable aids.

Why Should You Consider Rechargeable Hearing Aids?

Generally, rechargeable hearing aid options are not much more expensive than the models that use traditional hearing aid batteries, so the cost of adoption is negligible. They offer real ease of use, you don't need to consider changing batteries, you simply charge them and they work. The battery life on lithium-ion rechargeable hearing aids is excellent, it means even if you like to stream a lot of audio, they will last you the full day.

How Long Do Rechargeable Hearing Aids Last?

The hearing aids themselves should last for anything up to seven to ten years, the batteries are a slightly different thing. It is recommended that lithium-ion batteries are replaced every six years. In many of the hearing aids available, the batteries are sealed within the hearing aid and are usually removable only by the hearing aid manufacturer. The batteries will continue to function after the replacement period, they just might not deliver a full day's worth of use any longer.

Resound introduced the LiNX Quattro in late 2018 with a whopping thirty hours of battery life even when streaming. The devices are powered by Lithium-ion and Resound has been very clever with its recharger case design. It offers several days of charge on the go. With that type of battery life, I would imagine that the replacement of the battery will probably not be an issue for many years.

Let's Take A Look At What's Available

Oticon Phonak Resound Signia Unitron

Oticon Rechargeable Digital Hearing Aids

In March 2019 Oticon announced the release of their new Opn S platform which is their latest premium device. As part of this launch, Oticon introduced a very discrete lithium-ion powered rechargeable device across their three levels of technology. They are really good hearing aids but they only offer a desktop charger. It means that if you want to charge it you need to plug it in. This may seem obvious, but other hearing aid brands have designed chargers that will hold extra charges and can easily be thrown in a pocket.

Oticon Opn S rechargeable hearing aids

Opn S miniRITE-R

This is a wireless slimline Rechargeable 'Mini-Receiver-In-the-Ear (miniRITE)' hearing aid using a lithium-ion battery pack which can be easily replaced in the clinic rather than having to go back to the factory. I really see that as a plus.

They are small and pretty discreet hearing devices and come in a range of shades and bright colours. They offer four levels of receiver power allowing hearing losses from mild to severe to profound to be fitted. The internet-enabled Oticon Opn S comes with a number of additional features because it can connect to devices via the internet and Bluetooth.

The hearing aids will connect directly to your Apple Smartphone so you can make phone calls and listen to music without any intermediate streaming device. There are strong rumours that they will also be able to connect directly to Android 10 phones in 2020.

What are the key features

  • Easily replaced rechargeable batteries
  • 3 hours charging for a full day of use, including streaming*.
  • Connect to a TV, computer, smartphone and more via Bluetooth®
  • Tinnitus SoundSupport™ can play tinnitus relief sounds
  • Control hearing aids with the Oticon ON App
  • A Made for iPhone®  and soon a Made For Android hearing aid
  • With Telecoil (T-coil) that offers access to FM systems using a neckloop receiver
  • Volume and programme button
  • For mild to severe hearing loss
  • Water and dust resistant to IP68 standard
  • * Oticon say that expected operating time for rechargeable battery depends on use pattern, active feature set, hearing loss, sound environment, battery age and use of wireless accessories

Phonak Rechargeable Digital Hearing Aids

AS I said earlier, Phonak was the first to offer lithium-ion rechargeable hearing aids with the introduction of their first-ever Audeo Belong (Receiver In Canal) rechargeable hearing aids. The devices quickly proved hugely popular with hearing aid users and professionals. With the introduction of their new Marvel Made For Any Phone platform, it appears that they have re-committed themselves to lithium-ion as a power source with two Audeo rechargeable hearing aids and a Bolero Behind The Ear device. Let's take a quick look.

Bolero Marvel Rechargeable Hearing Aids

The Bolero Marvel range is the latest range of Behind The Ear hearing aids from Phonak. It consists of just two hearing aid models, The Bolero Marvel M and the Bolero Marvel PR. The PR is a lithium-ion powered rechargeable hearing aid. The device will really only cover hearing losses up to moderate to severe. The device is available across the four levels of Phonak hearing aid technology. The Marvel will come with a small charger case but you can purchase a larger charger case that will hold a drying tablet separately. Neither of these charger cases holds extra charges, however, they also offer a power pack that plugs into the bottom of the larger case that will hold several charges for on the go. The large charger case with a battery pack is not exactly pocket-sized though.

Bolero Marvel PR

Bolero Marvel PR with slim tube fitted

The Bolero Marvel PR is slightly larger than the M, but it is still relatively discrete. It uses the same multi-functional button as the smaller M. The PR is a  lithium-ion powered rechargeable hearing aid can be fitted with a slim tube (which you can see above) or an ear hook for traditional tubing and ear mould. The PR will cover hearing losses down to 80 dB in the low to 100 dB in the high frequencies. That, of course, depends on configuration, with the slim tube fitted, that reduces to 70 in the low and 90 dB in the high frequencies.

The PR has all of the features of the Marvel platform with a direct connection to any Bluetooth mobile phones and  Roger devices. It also has a telecoil onboard so it can be used to connect to a Loop System. Phonak say that you will get a full day of use out of one charge and use time is similar to the Audeo. The device will be available in the four levels of technology, the 90, the 70, the 50 and the 30

What Are The Key Features?

  • Stereo Bluetooth streaming: Stereo streaming from any Bluetooth enabled device, that means iPhone, iPad, laptops, computers, Macs, Android phones, Windows phones, hell any Bluetooth-enabled phone.
  • Real Hands-free calling in stereo: Like the Audeo B-direct, the Marvel offers true hands-free calling from Bluetooth-enabled phones and VOIP services like Skype, except, to both hearing aids.
  • TV Streaming: Marvel can stream directly from Bluetooth-enabled TVs, and can also stream from the Phonak TV Connector accessory.
  • Rechargeability: They say all of the Marvel rechargeables will deliver a full day of hearing aid use from a single charge.
  • Remote adjustments: Marvel hearing aids can be adjusted remotely by your hearing expert.
  • New App Eco-System: Brand new apps to make life easier and engage the consumer in the process.
  • RogerDirect: This is really fascinating, for the first time, users will be able to stream from Roger devices directly to their hearing aids.
  • Full Phonak Feature Set: Unlike the Audeo B-direct, the Marvel devices will not be hobbled, they will offer full and up to date inter-ear features.

Resound Rechargeable Digital Hearing Aids

Resound introduced the new rechargeable hearing aid, the Linx Quatro in 2018. It is a lithium-ion powered hearing aid and they say it will have the best battery life in the industry. The stats they have released look really good and so do the devices. The design of the charger case is outstanding, in fact, it is one of the best charger cases available. Of course, the hearing aids are pretty good too.

LiNX Quattro LT61

The Quattro rechargeable is a premium device and has now been introduced in a 9, 7 and 5 technology level. They won't replace the Linx 3D 9, 7 and 5, they will sit above them.

Resound Quattro hearing aids in charger

Longest Battery Life in The Industry

The Quattro has the longest battery life in the industry, even though they are very discreet. Just one three hour charge will give up to twenty-four hours use even if you are streaming for half the time. The charger acts as a carry case and it holds its own charge so that you can charge on the go if you need to. The charger will hold an extra three days of charge but it is small enough to put in a coat pocket. There is an auto on and off function and LEDs that allow you to see at a glance what the charge status is.

Made For iPhone Made For Android Hearing Aid

The Linx Quattro is a direct connection or Made For iPhone hearing aid just like all the Linx devices before it. Resound have redesigned the wireless radio though and they say that it is more powerful than ever before. That should translate into pretty stable connection to the iPhone. The Quattro will also be the first-ever Made For Android hearing aid. ReSound and Google have developed the Made For Android standard. It means a direct connection to at least Google Pixel 3 Android phones and Samsung Galaxy S10 phones. We would expect many more phones to become compatible in 2020.

What Are The Key Features?

  • The aids are Receiver In Canal devices
  • The devices use a brand new chip platform
  • The chip has 100% faster processing than 3D
  • The chip has 100% additional memory over the 3D
  • The devices are available in three new technology level
  • Resound are using a new way of handling directionality inputs
  • They have increased their dynamic input range, calling it industry-leading
  • They have introduced a redesigned wireless radio with extra signal strength

Signia Rechargeable Digital Hearing Aids

Signia formerly Siemens, were quick to follow Phonak with their lithium-ion rechargeable hearing aids. In 2018, Signia introduced a new hearing aid platform called the Nx. As part of this launch, they introduced two new hearing aids called the Pure Charge N Go and the Motion Charge N Go which were both rechargeables. They then introduced an interesting new rechargeable hearing aid called the Styletto which represents a completely new type of hearing device model, a model they call a Slim RIC. In March 2019, they released an upgraded Styletto called the Styletto Connect which is a Bluetooth hearing aid. Their latest hearing aid platform, the Xperience range, was released in October 2019 and it too offered rechargeable hearing aids. Let's take a look at what they have on offer.

Styletto Connect

Styletto Connect Hearing Aids

We introduce the Styletto Connect first here because we really think it is an interesting hearing aid. The Styletto Connect hearing aid is a discreet device that offers coverage for mild to moderate hearing losses. It is an attractive design that does not look like traditional hearing aids. The charger case is outstanding and it delivers four extra charges for the devices which means you can go away for a long weekend and forget your plug. The Styletto Connect is available in three levels of technology.

The Relevant Power Facts

Signia say that Styletto Connect's high-capacity power cell will allow for enhanced Bluetooth connectivity. This will enable users to enjoy high-quality, long-lasting stereo streaming of TV audio, music, and phone calls directly to both hearing aids.

They say that you will be able to stream up to five hours per day and still benefit from 16 hours of battery life before needing to recharge. That's pretty good streaming time and battery life.

The new X platform has several new features which many are excited about already. These are the first hearing aids to use Motion sensors to change how sound is presented. They also offer a new strategy for sound inputs.

Pure Charge&Go X

Signia Pure X Charge&Go

The Pure Charge&Go X will be available from November, it is a lithium-ion powered rechargeable RIC with Bluetooth connectivity. Signia say that the devices have 20% more charging capacity and are 16% smaller than the previous Pure Charge&Go Nx. It adds up to a svelte and discrete device that offers better battery life even with streaming. Signia have introduced a new inductive charger with a lid to protect the hearing aids as they charge, something that many people had complained about. The charger also works as a dehumidifier and is designed to fit custom ear moulds as well. The charger does not hold its own charge though, so it is not an on the go solution.

Motion Charge N Go Nx

Signia Motion Gharge N Go Hearing aids

The Motion hearing aid is a very versatile device that offers coverage for mild, moderate and severe hearing losses. It can be fitted with a thin tube and instant tip, which you can see above, or a traditional ear hook, tube and ear mould. It means that people who like BTEs now have a rechargeable option. The device is available in three levels of technology. Again, the charger does not hold any charge.

Signia say that Motion Charge&Go’s high-capacity power cell will allow for enhanced Bluetooth connectivity. This will enable users to enjoy high-quality, long-lasting stereo streaming of TV audio, music, and phone calls directly to both hearing aids.

Pure Charge N Go Nx

Signia Pure Charge & Go

This device is a very nicely designed Pure (RIC) device which is powered by a Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery pack, again it offers the new system which separately processes the wearer’s own voice. The hearing aid has a rocker switch which allows programme changes and volume changes. It is IP68 rated. It can also be fitted with the four levels of receiver making it suitable for most hearing losses. It comes with superior connectivity with direct streaming and the myControl App. It also has access to the full live remote support via TeleCare 3.0. The device is available in three levels of technology.
